What Is Gestational Diabetes?

Pregnant women who have never had diabetes before but who have high blood glucose (sugar) levels during pregnancy are said to have gestational diabetes. According to a 2014 analysis by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the prevalence of gestational diabetes is as high as 9.2%.

Gestational Diabetes can occur when the hormones from the placenta block the action of the mother’s insulin in her body. This is called Insulin Resistance, which in turn leads to high Glucose levels in the body.

How Can Gestational Diabetes Affect Your Baby?

Untreated or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can have serious consequences on your baby.  Baby’s organs start forming during the first 8 weeks of pregnancy. High blood glucose levels can be harmful during this early stage and can increase the chance that your baby will have birth defects, such as heart defects or defects of the brain or spine. High blood glucose levels during pregnancy can also increase the chances of premature delivery, weigh too much, or have breathing problems or low blood glucose right after birth.

Poorly managed GDM can also increase the chance that you will have a miscarriage or a stillborn baby.

How Does One Manage Gestational Diabetes?

Gestational Diabetes can be treated with focus on GDM Diet and lifestyle modifications. Medication in the form of tablets or external insulin might be required in some cases.

Most women are able to manage their blood sugar level through control on Diet and regular exercises.

Once you book for our GDM program, we would ship a GDM box to your house to get you started. The program will involve below elements:

Personal Health Coach:

Every user is assigned a Personal Health Coach who guides the user on phone for a range of lifestyle issues such as weight management, stress, FAQs (around GDM) etc. They also touch base with the treating doctors (if that information is available) whenever required.

Personal Nutritionist:

GDM management has a very strong nutrition angle and users generally have a lot of questions on each element of Diet. Our Dietitians create a customized GDM specific Diet plan for everyone and subsequently regular follow ups happen on the same. The intervention happens on phone and messages.

Smart Glucometer:

We give One Touch Verio Flex Meter which is Bluetooth connected, enabling the user and her counsellors to see all the glucose readings anytime anywhere (through app). This is very critical to ensure monitoring is happening + pin pointed inputs on Diet can be provided.
